If your pickup and trailer exceed the value of your home....you might be a barrel racer"

Please Remember: A tipped barrel or broken pattern is a NO TIME.

You may be led to the gate, but only ONE horse can enter the arena.  You must be on your horse when it comes in the arena!!

COMPLETE YOUR RUN, if you do not keep the same speed/motion finishing the pattern, it will result in a NO TIME. (Otherwise you may end up in a division and get a payout when others run to their ability and would fall in that division)

You may circle before you start your run, but be sure to not break the eye, as when you come home, be sure not to circle back and break the eye beam also.

Greetings,

Thank you for your interest in the NBHA.

The National Barrel Horse Association, headquartered in Augusta, GA, is the largest barrel racing organization in the world. In 1992 the NBHA revolutionized the barrel racing industry by pioneering the divisional format, which allows riders of all skill levels a chance to compete and win money and prizes in barrel racing competition.

Divisional barrel racing using the 3D and 4D format is the heart of the NBHA. Divisional barrel racing gives all competitors-from beginners to professionals, from youth to seniors- a chance to compete, learn and succeed in barrel racing. The divisional format encourages riders to improve their skills and work toward the higher Divisions, while still having a chance to be competitive.

Memberships are $62 per year with family discounts available. This entitles you to a year subscription to The Barrel Horse News, and the opportunity to compete at District, State and National levels. Each state is divided into districts where you would compete. This is in order to help with travel distances for members. As a member you may compete at any NBHA sanctioned event, but will only accumulate points in your designated district. These points will go towards year end district awards, which are given to 5 places in each Division in each class (Open, Youth (18 & Under), and Senior (50 and over)). The South Dakota State Finals are held each year in May on Memorial Weekend in Huron. To qualify for the finals you must be a current member and have competed at 4 sanctioned jackpots in your district by December 31st. The finals consist of 2 runs with at least $1500 added money per run and the average of the 2 runs wins saddles, buckles and many other prizes.

At our local jackpots we usually pay out the 3D system (1 second increments), if there are over 40 contestants we will use the 4D system (fast time, fast time + .5 second, fast time + 1 second, fast time + 2 seconds), if there are over 75 contestants we will use a 5D system (1/2 second increments).

District 4 consists of 10 counties in northeast South Dakota. Entry fees at most of our jackpots are: Open (anyone of any age or sex) $25 ($16 jackpot, $4 arena fee, $2 District fee, $2 State Fee, $1 Electric Eye fee), Youth (18 and Under) and Senior (50 and Over) $18 ($10.60 jackpot, $2.40 arena fee, $2 District fee, $2 State fee, $1 Electric Eye). 100% of added money is paid out. We also have a pee wee barrel race, open to anyone 10 and under not competing in the sanctioned jackpot. Entry fees are $3. We also have Exhibition runs for $5. This is a run that no money is awarded. Basically you “rent” the arena for a practice run or just a warm up for your horse in a competition setting.

Memberships are available at each jackpot. Come and join in the fun and see what the NBHA and Divisional barrel racing is all about.

There are many organizations out there having different Divisional formats, so be sure to check out the specifics of each organization.
